The Nashville Symphony is one of the many arts and cultural institutions in Nashville that reflects it’s best nature. The endless challenge for excellence, and the all-encompassing nature of the pursuit that all are worthy of that excellence, make up much of our character.

I don’t know when it happened, maybe in my radio training? I used to love, as a DJ, to walk right up to the beginning of a song over the intro. I was thrilled to finish a PSA announcement timed just in time for the top of the hour news feed.

In my professional life after radio (I used to actually cue up vinyl. It’s been a while), I have always set up projects with last minute deadlines. Or, worse, created fake last minute deadlines that only existed in my head to just have one.

I’ve come to realize that I actually never will be “caught up”. There will always be one more call that needs to be made, one more email that needs to be sent, one more blog that needs to be read, you get the point.

Joan brought to my attention that these self created deadlines are movable! It’s true, things do have a finish date, just like they have start dates. The real peace comes in knowing that they will start and stop and start over again with out my panicking over it. Linda, my campaign manager told me calmly, “You won’t ever be done so just do what you can.”

So that adrenaline I get from the words to the song starting just I complete the tag is cool and everything. However, I have learned that I may be stepping all over a really great intro.

Let the music play.

I’ve been thinking this week about that breath at the end of phrase in music that allows our transcendence. Instrumental music in all it’s mathematically complexity is the most vibrant at it’s pause.

I have been trying to be mindful of those moments in my life where the silence is the most important part of the communication. The white space in art, the silence in music, the pause in the monologue.

I’m not talking about finding time to be quite. That has it’s own value. I’m speaking of the space surrounded by the art of of our lives that makes the moment vibrant.

Love & Olive Oil is one of my favorite blogs, I’m way to lazy to use the recipes but the photographs are my eye candy. The Splendid Table is one of my favorite podcasts. In a recent repeat broadcast there was an interview with Darra Goldstein about her her dissertation, entitled Crime and Nourishment which focused on the food and foodways of Hollywood gangster films – you can find more here in Gastronomica. I ran across this growing list in Quora: What are the best food-related movies?

However, my curiosity is more about the food used in all story telling. From the Ginger Bread Man and the Cookie Monster to Fried Green Tomatoes and Clyde calling Bonnie Peaches.

Take notice along with me the way food is used to both tell a story and invoke a character’s development.

Consider this quote from Antonin Careme 1784-183: “The arts are five in number: painting, sculpture, poetry, music, architecture –whose main branch is confectionery.”

Or this one from Austin Powers 1999: “Do I make you hungry, baby?”

What are your favorite food moments in film and television?
