The quilt stories
On a recent trip home to see my extended family in celebration of my mother's life I enjoyed a few moments hearing about some quilts with pieces dating from 1890-1954.
My long time friend, Ricky Tims knows all about quilts! At his prompting, I was encouraged to document the stories before they were lost to my mother's illness. I was happy when she felt well enough one afternoon to show me the treasures.
I have heard that writing the stories and pinning them to the quilts is customary documentation of provenance, I like video better. No matter how you capture your stories, I encourage you to start now. I've spent the better part of my professional life learning how to identify stories that need telling and helping others identify sharable content. I've learned this past week, that it is just as important to capture your own history as it is to create the stories of your future.
